Common Sense Tips to make your Maui trip better

  • Posted on

You know what happens to many of us when we go on vacation? Vacation brain. You know, being relaxed, enjoying your vacation, and sometimes forgetting about common sense.

I recently came across a list of common sense tips on Reddit, and thought I’d share, with my own tips thrown in.

General Common Sense Tips

  • Always park legally ~ this is a big one especially along the Road to Hana.
  • Tradewinds usually pick up in the afternoon, early mornings are usually calmer. Consider this when planning your beach activities (blowing sand isn’t fun at the beach, but the breeze sure is great when hiking).
  • While Maui is paradise, crime does occur. Be smart about your belongings. Don’t leave things laying out visible in your car, condo or hotel room.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen ~ this applies even when not at the beach. All water eventually percolates into the ocean and impacts our reefs.

Hiking Common Sense Tips

  • Stay on the path, don’t trespass on private property.
  • Don’t stand or swim under waterfalls (things may fall on you).
  • Avoid stagnant water.
  • People get injured cliff jumping and jumping off waterfalls into pools below. One rule of thumb is not to jump unless others are jumping in that same location (let them test the water depth first).
  • Don’t cross streams during flash floods (rushing, rising water).
  • Check the weather radar before heading out on a hike.

Beach Common Sense Tips

  • Watch the waves 15-20 minutes before going in (you are looking for riptides and currents, watching wave sets).
  • Always swim, snorkel and dive with a buddy.
  • Don’t swim in brown water or where streams enter the ocean ~ you never know what is in that run-off and sharks often loiter there.
  • Sharks are more active around dusk and down
  • Check out the SnorkelStore for their snorkeling report.
  • Remember, ocean conditions can change suddenly.
  • Don’t approach turtles or seals – they are endangered and protected by law.

Do you have a vacation brain story? Don’t feel badly ~ it happens to all of us. Hopefully these tips are helpful.
